Aku-Sika Barrett is a Ghanaian author, designer, and entrepreneur whose life and work have been shaped by creativity, resilience, and a deep appreciation for cultures around the world.

Born and raised in Ghana, her passion for textiles, fashion, and travel began in childhood, when she created her own fabrics from crushed berries and hand-sewed clothes for her dolls. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong journey of artistic exploration.

Over the years, Aku-Sika has lived and worked in Gabon, Egypt, Dubai, Indonesia, Qatar, Portugal, and Italy. Each country enriched her perspective, deepened her appreciation for culture, and influenced her creative voice. While living in Cairo, she discovered the art of silk painting. In Jakarta, she studied traditional batik-making, adding another dimension to her textile artistry. She later studied fashion design at Istituto Marangoni in Milan, where she combined these influences to create her signature label, Atelier Aku-Sika.

Beyond fashion, Aku-Sika has pursued a wide range of creative and entrepreneurial ventures, always guided by a spirit of curiosity, reinvention, and lifelong learning.

Her debut memoir, The Butterfly That Became a Kite: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Letting Go, draws on the most profound experiences of her life. Written with honesty, vulnerability, and grace, it explores the enduring power of love, the reality of grief, and the quiet strength required to rebuild a life after unimaginable loss.

When she is not writing or designing, Aku-Sika enjoys painting on silk, playing the piano, reading, and travelling. She divides her time between Ghana and Italy, where she continues to create, explore, and embrace new adventures.
